Ingredient Spotlight: Sweet Potato

26 October 2026

Sweet potato has earned its place in kitchens around the world, bringing a naturally sweet flavour, a rich colour and a satisfying character to a wide variety of dishes. Once associated primarily with traditional home cooking, it is now a familiar ingredient across everything from soups and savoury snacks to prepared meals and contemporary food products.

For food manufacturers, sweet potato offers an appealing combination of flavour, versatility and visual warmth, with plenty of scope to explore beyond the obvious applications.

A root with a long history and an enduring future

Despite its name, sweet potato is not closely related to the ordinary potato. It belongs to an entirely different plant family (Convolvulaceae or ‘Morning Glory’) and has been cultivated for thousands of years, with its origins in tropical regions of the Americas.

From there, it spread around the world, becoming an important food crop in many different cultures. Today, sweet potato features in an enormous variety of cuisines, from roasted and mashed dishes to curries, soups, baked goods and snacks.

Grown as a perennial crop in warmer climates and an annual one in cooler regions, sweet potato is seen as a key crop for food security in a time of climate change, due to its fast growth, relatively efficient water usage, and resilience in sub-optimal soil conditions. In an era of increasing concern over the effect of climate change on the food industry, sweet potato is an excellent crop to know and appreciate.

Naturally sweet, surprisingly versatile

Sweet potato brings more than sweetness to a finished product. Its characteristic flavour can add depth to savoury recipes, balance spices and complement ingredients with smoky, savoury or aromatic notes.

Think sweet potato alongside chilli, cumin and paprika, or paired with garlic, onion and herbs. It can also work well with coconut in savoury dishes, as well as with warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg in sweeter applications.

Its colour is another desirable trait: The familiar orange flesh of many sweet potato varieties can contribute an appealing warm hue, helping to give products an appetising appearance alongside their flavour. It’s even used in premium pet foods to compliment meat ingredients, providing essential nutrients, texture and colour.

A plant-based pioneer

Sweet potato is a common hero ingredient for vegetarian and vegan recipes including curries, stews, burgers and bakes. Thanks to its hearty nature and impressive nutritional density, it acts as an anchor for a dish, proving that a lack of meat doesn’t mean a lack of flavour, texture or nutrients.

From being the star of the show to a modest supporting ingredient, sweet potato has the versatility to do it all. Thickening sauces and stews, providing bulk and texture in a plant based burger, or bringing a rich earthiness to brownies, cakes and tarts, wherever sweet potato is found, it always has something special to contribute.

Sweet potato in dried form

For food manufacturers, dried sweet potato offers a practical way to incorporate this familiar root vegetable into recipes while avoiding the handling and storage requirements associated with fresh produce.

Dried ingredients are generally easier to store and handle, with a longer shelf life than their fresh equivalents when kept under appropriate conditions. They can also simplify ingredient preparation and help manufacturers manage the exact quantities that are required for production.

The format matters, too. Depending on the intended application, different cut sizes and forms can support different requirements, from visible vegetable pieces to more evenly distributed granules and powders. When selecting an ingredient, it is important to consider all aspects of the specification in order to find the right solution for a manufacturing process.  At J L Priestley & Co Ltd, we can supply sweet potato in a range of different sizes, including 10x10x2mm dice, 10x10x10mm dice, 5x5mm dice, 1-3mm granules, and powder forms.
